US President Donald Trump has announced that the suspect had been taken into custody over the killing of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk after a massive manhunt.

Trump made this known on Friday during a live studio interview with Fox News.

“Somebody very close to him turned him in,” Trump said.

“The person was involved with law enforcement, but was a person of faith, a minister, and brought him to a US Marshal who was fantastic.

“They drove into the police headquarters, and he’s there now.”

He added: “We have the person that we think is the person we’re looking for.”

Law enforcement sources identified the suspect as 22-year-old Tyler Robinson.

Hundreds of agents from across 20 law enforcement agencies were involved in the hunt.

Kirk, a conservative activist and co-founder of Turning Point USA, died Wednesday after he was shot at an event at Utah Valley University.

He was speaking to a large crowd at an outdoor “Prove Me Wrong” debate, where he invites students to challenge his political and cultural views.

Authorities shared a video late Thursday of the suspect climbing down from a roof following the shooting, after sharing images throughout the day of a “person of interest” and asking the public for help in identifying the individual.

A law enforcement official said investigators have “good video footage” of the suspect and had recovered the weapon used in the shooting.

Kirk’s body returned to his home state of Arizona on Vice President JD Vance’s plane Thursday.

Trump paid tribute to Kirk, and elected officials on both sides of the aisle swiftly condemned the attack and denounced acts of political violence.
